Mikey Garcia Slams Canelo Alvarez for Choosing Money Over Challenges

Los Angeles: Former boxing champion Mikey Garcia has criticized Canelo Alvarez, calling him more of a "businessman" than a fighter, prioritizing financial gains over tough matchups.

Garcia stated that Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) is focused on "low-risk, high-reward" fights to build his fortune, estimated at $250 million, with plans to earn $400 million from upcoming bouts.

Canelo, who has not faced a top-tier opponent since losing to Dmitry Bivol in 2022, is set to fight IBF super middleweight champion William Scull on May 3 in Riyadh, followed by a September clash with Terence Crawford.

Critics argue that Alvarez is avoiding strong contenders like David Benavidez and David Morrell to maintain his championship status without significant risk. Garcia added that Canelo is now more focused on building his brand rather than seeking the toughest competition in the ring.
